Hamsters, Guinea Pigs, Sugar Gliders
(Marsupials), Rats, Mice, & Hedgehogs:

At Emerson Animal Hospital, we treat all of these animals and more.  As our friends and clients accept new and more unusual pets into their homes, our patients change.  Each species has its own individual requirements for good health and a longer happy life, and every one of these small animals has found a special place in someone's heart.  From a hamster that can easily be mistaken for a mouse when on the loose to guinea pigs with their excited squeals and a sugar glider mother who watches you intently as her babies' small heads pop in and out of her furry pouch, they are all exciting and fun.

Their care is based on the prevention of health problems and disease.  Clean surroundings and tender love and care are what all pocket pets need.  Semi-annual physical examinations and diagnostic tests at times, castrations for male and ovariohysterectomies (spay) for female non-breeding pets where possible, and proper nutrition have extended their lives, and now makes it possible for us to enjoy pocket pets as family members for longer times!

And occasionally, someone even sneaks in a squirrel.  This is Punkin, an eight year-old who fell from her nest when she was a tiny baby.  Her mother didn't come and get her, so a friend found her and nursed her back to health.  Since then, Punkin has led a charmed life, nothing but great food and lots of love (caught her in motion and on the move here racing around the exam room - she thinks she owns the clinic).  What more could she ask after a rough start?

Call us about your pet's care and diet!

The proper nutrition for each species is very important, with each needing specific foods, along with proper housing and care to survive.  Most importantly in all of these animals is the fact that not feeding the correct diet can be fatal!
